KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): About 100 US troops have been sent to Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, to push back Talibaninfo-icon from the strategic city, the Pentagon said on Monday.

The US military personnel arrived in Lashkargah after the insurgents mounted a coordinated summer offensive that has forced the Afghan security forces on the defensive.

"They've gone down there to assist the police zone headquarters and their leadership team with a focused train, advise and assist mission," Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said.

Addressing a news briefing, the Defense Department spokesman said about the deployment: "This will not be a permanent presence." ABC News quoted him as saying 80 percent of the province was under the control of insurgents.
