Woman, 2 police, tribal elder killed in fresh violence

PULKHUMRI/SAR-I-PUL (Pajhwok): A woman and two policemen were killed when Talibaninfo-icon attacked a police vehicle in Baghlan province and a tribal influential figure was killed in separately in Sar-i-Pul province, officials said on Saturday.

Ahmad Javid Basharat, Baghlan police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News a police Ranger pick-up came under attack from rebels this noon.

A police official was carrying his family in the vehicle belonging to Pul-i-Charkhi prison of capital Kabulinfo-icon to Pul-i-Khumri city, Baghlan’s capital, when came under Taliban attack on the highway. Two children were also wounded in the incident, he added. 

Basharat said security forces after being informed of the incident reached Khanjan district but Taliban had fled the area.    

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesman, confirmed the fighters targeted a police vehicle on the northern part of Salang Passinfo-icon highway. Mujahid claimed five policemen were killed and the vehicle destroyed.

The Salang highway connecting northern provinces of Afghanistaninfo-icon to Kabul is one of secure routes in Baghlan and over the past four years this was for the first time Taliban attacked a police pick-up on the road.

Elsewhere, a tribal elder was killed along with his guard in Sancharak district of northern Sar-i-Pul province, an official said.

Zabihullah Amani, the governor’s spokesman, said Katib Nazir, the tribal elder, was attacked afteroffering Friday prayers.

Amani said police had arrested a man in connection with the incident and were chasing four other individuals identified by the detainee.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ali Hakimi, Sar-i-Pul provincial council member, said such murders caused panic among people and widened the distance between people and the government.  

He said currently southern parts of Sar-i-Pul city, the provincial capital, and some areas in Sancharak and Sozma Qala districts were under serious security threats.

Kohistanat district was under completely control of Taliban. Despite many repeated requests, the central government has so far conducted no clearing operations in the mentioned areas, Hakimi said.
