Zakhilwal confirms Qatar meetings with Taliban

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Afghan government acknowledges it has long been in contact with the Talibaninfo-icon as part of its quest for peace in the country.

In an interview published in The News on Tuesday, Ambassador Dr. Umar Zakhilwal confirmed that peace talks in Qatar were held several rounds of meetings.

Many problems with the Taliban would be resolved in upcoming meetings, the diplomat hoped, saying he would not raise expectations of the people.

The ambassador said most Afghans desire peace while a few had reservations about a recent peace deal with the Gulbadin Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The restoration of peace and efforts to find a solution to problems through negotiations would yield positive results for Afghanistan, Pakistaninfo-icon and the region.

In response to a question, he said Pakistan had always played a positive role in trying to help restore peace in Afghanistan.
