Zakhilwal wants Sharif to order Afghan widow’s release

Zakhilwal wants Sharif to order Afghan widow’s release

Nov 02, 2016 - 15:09

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghan ambassador to Pakistaninfo-icon on Wednesday voiced his disappointment over the rejection of Sharbat Gula’s bail application by an immigration court in Peshawar.

Despite assurances from Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and other government leaders, the ambassador regretted, the bail petition of the iconic Afghan widow was turned down.

The arrest of Sharbat Gula had already hurt feelings of all Afghans, Dr. Omar Zakhilwal wrote on his Facebook page. The ruling was a further disregard to public feelings, he said.

He urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to intervene himself in the case and order the release of the widow, a mother of four. The Afghan government is ready to facilitate the repatriation of Gula and her children’s to Afghanistaninfo-icon with dignity.

“If the federal government indeed wants to free Gula, then she needs not to be subjected to court appearances and rulings. She has been in prison and charges framed against her by a federal agency.

“It is within the authority of the federal government to withdraw those charges and let her walk free. It would certainly be the right thing to do.
Gula’s ID card was neither fake nor obtained fraudulently. NADRA had issued the ID to her and her late husband as per a normal process years ago.”
