KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan government and different institutions in the country on Friday denounced the killing of Aryana Television reporter and demanded punishment for individuals behind the killing of the brave journalist.

Aryana television news reporter Niamatullah Zaheer was killed while a local television reporter wounded in a roadside explosion in southern Helmand province early on Friday.

Pajhwok Afghan News Reporter Zainullah Stanikzai said: “We were on our way to the 2nd police district where fighting was underway when the vehicle we were traveling in hit a roadside bomb.”

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has expressed his regret over the killing of Afghan journalist in Helmand, a statement from Presidential Palace has said.

Ghani said in the statement: “Terrorists and the enemy of Afghanistaninfo-icon proved once again that they did not believe on humanity and would cross every limit to reach to their goals.”

The president said attacks of this nature would never halt the way of the freedom of expression and would not weaken the resolve of journalists in their mission to keep the masses aware the events happening in the country.

He said slain Naimatullah Zaheer worked in hard situations in restive Helmand and bravely reported the situation to the people.

The president said government put in place all available resources for the protection of journalists and would take more effective measures for the security of reporters.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah also denounced the killing of Afghan journalist in Helmand. He said with the killing of a reporter the enemy could not shut the voices of people of that particular locality.

A statement from the Afghanistan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSF) termed the ongoing year deadliest for Afghan journalist. The organisation demanded security institution to take more effective measures for the safety of journalists.

Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat also condemned the killing of Niamatullah Zaheer and termed him a brave journalist.

A statement from the Afghanistan Journalists Centre (AJC) also denounced the killing of Zaheer and demanded the punishment for people behind the incident.
