JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The authorities on Saturday began demolishing structures built near the new Behsud Bridge in eastern Nangarhar province to pave the way for construction of a two-lane road on the bridge.

The road project would cost $600,000, the governor’s house said in a statement.

Construction of the new bridge has recently been completed. The new bridge is built parallel with the old Behsud bridge that connects a number of districts in Nangarhar, Kunar and Nuristan provinces.

Governor Gulab Mangal said the demolished structures --- homes and four walls --- were privately owned. He said all legal process had been completed to acquire the private land and thanked the land’s owners.

The governor also directed the construction company concerned to launch work on the road’s construction as soon as possible and complete it in the stipulated time.

The statement said the contractor, Alokozai, had said the road would be completed in three months’ time and other related works would also be finished.

Provincial council secretary Zabihullah Zamarai expressed happiness over the launch of work on the road and said the road should not be delayed like the bridge.
