GARDEZ (Pajhwok): A former jihadiinfo-icon commander and his gunmen beat and insulted traffic police officials in the capital of southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Sunday.

A traffic policeman, Izatullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they looking for non-custom-paid vehicles and tinted-glasses when they stopped a Fielder model car with tinted-glasses.

“But the driver said it was Ziauddin’s vehicle, and then we told the driver to call him.”

“After a while, Ziauddin came along with armed men and badly beat all traffic policemen on duty and also verbally abused us.”

He said their pistols, helmets and other equipment had been missing after they were beaten. Izatullah warned of duty strike if their beating was not investigated.

Another beaten traffic policeman, 2nd Lt. Jafar, confirmed the attackers were commander Ziauddin’s affiliates.

Ziauddin denied speaking regarding the issue. Ziauddin is Jamiat-e-Islami Afghanistan party leader in Paktia and is a former jihadi commander.

Meanwhile, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Qader Gul Zadran confirmed the incident and said it was being investigated and the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“The car was from Ziauddin’s family and the driver clashed with police over the removal of tinted-glasses. Gunshots were also fired from Ziauddin side but the perpetrators would be introduced to attorneys after being arrested.”
