KUNDUZ (Pajhwok): The residents of Imam Sahib district in northern Kunduz province say insurgents are operating just two kilometers from the district headquarters.

They urge the central and local authorities to pay serious attention to security and launch operations against the militants.

Sher Agha, a resident, told Pajhwok News Agency the Taliban were present and active only two kilometers from the district centre, a situation that had worried local residents.

“The Taliban have set up a check-point two kilometers away from the district center and they freely check people and vehicles.”

He said the number of militants was increasing day by day and asked the government to launch operations to clear the area the militants from; otherwise they would threaten the district.

Rauf, another resident, expressed concern about a possible conflict and a critical security situation in the area.

He asked the government to maintain security for people. “I lost my house and everything I had to the past wars and nothing is left with me. I am a poor man and don’t know where to go if war starts again in this area. We ask the government to launch clearing operations against Taliban militants.”

The district administrative chief, Amanuddin Quraishi, Pajhwok that the security situation was unsatisfactory as some 1,500 Taliban militants existed and were active in the town.

“We (the government) are still in a defensive position because Taliban including foreign militants outnumber us and they want to sneak into central Asia through this district.”

However, provincial police Chief Col. Masoom Hashimi said the Taliban were unable to face security forces in Kunduz province as they had suffered defeat.

“We have strengthened our check-posts; security forces will not allow Taliban to reach the city. Our winter operations will start soon and we don’t want people to be worried about the situation”, Hashimi said.
