Nov 16, 2016 - 14:56

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Thirty-two people, including 28 security personnel, have been released from Talibaninfo-icon’s captivity in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.

Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News, commando unit personnel launched an operation against Taliban’s prison in Shorkai locality last night.

As a result, 32 people including 28 Afghan soldiers were freed. “The prison was run inside a house, with its guard managing to escapeduring the operation. No clash occurred in the area,” Zwak said.

Meanwhile, the 215thMaiwand Corps spokesman, Lt. Mohammad Rasul Zazai, confirmed the raid. However, he put the number of the individuals released at 36 people. Thirty-two of them were civilians and two soldiers, he added.

According Zazai, nobody suffered casualties during the raid. No one was arrested either. The Taliban have said nothing yet about the incident.

Last month, some security officials were captured after being surrounded by the Taliban in the Bushran area of Lashkargah -- the provincial capital.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi confirmed Afghan forces operation on the prison but said that no security personnel were included among those released..

“We strongly reject the claim of Afghan forces release from the Taliban jail, the prison kept people involved in criminal activities and disputes, the enemy raided the jail in which only non-political inmates were kept,” he said.

He added the Taliban imprisoned Afghan forces in separate and more protected locations.
