NATO signals willingness to support reconciliation

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A NATOinfo-icon commander in Afghanistaninfo-icon has expressed the alliance’s willingness to cooperate with the reconciliation process under a proper plan involving tribal elders and influential figures, an official said on Thursday.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of eastern Nangarhar, said Lt. Gen. Rosario Castellano, civil outreach officer for the Resolute Support (RS) mission, voiced his readiness during a meeting with Governor Gulab Mangal. 

During the meeting late on Wednesday, Khogyani said, the two sides discussed a wide range of issues, including the repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistaninfo-icon and Iran, womeninfo-icon’s welfare and the peace process.

Mangal said his administration planned a campaign to promote peace and reconciliation in remote areas and villages. Tribal elders would be involved in the effort. He viewed the role of local councils, civil societyinfo-icon and provincial council as necessary.

Mangal also briefed the NATO commander on the resettlement of returning refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) in Nangarhar and assistance provided by the Afghan government to them.

Mangal said amount 100 million afghanis had been distributed to unregistered returnees while efforts were underway to build a township and provide educationinfo-icon facilities for them.

Gen. Castellano assured the governor that the alliance would cooperate with government of Afghanistan in promoting reconciliation with the support of religious scholars.

He promised education-related issues of returnees would be discussed with officials of the ministry concerned. The general expressed satisfaction with the hard work that has been done for women’s prosperity in the province.
