Masked gunmen ‘seen’ in Ghazni’s Zankhan district

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of the Zankhan district of southern Ghazni province claim dozens of Urdu speaking masked gunmen have appeared in the town.

Samiullah, a resident, told Pajhwok Afghan News the masked militants had come to the area along with their families and they were believed to be ‘Punjabis’.

He said sometimes Afghans Talibaninfo-icon had also been spotted around the masked gunmen. Some other residents of the district held similar views.

Governor Abdul Karim Matin said Uzbek, Tajik and Pakistani rebels fought alongside the Taliban in Afghanistaninfo-icon against the government.

He said the masked gunmen had not come to the district for sightseeing but to carry out subversive activities.

Provincial police spokesman, Fahim Amarkhel, said so far they had not received any report about the presence of new aliens in the province. But he said there were Pakistani militants in Taliban ranks.

However, Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, rejected the presence of Pakistani fighter in their ranks. He said the presence of masked gunmen in Zankhan district was government’s propaganda.
