24 insurgents killed in Lashkargah fighting

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Two dozen militants have been killed in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.

On the other hand, the Talibaninfo-icon claimed inflicting casualties on the security forces in a string of clashes.

Cap. Ahmad Shakil Tasal, deputy spokesman for the 215th Maiwand Military Corps, confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News a series of clashes in Lashkargah over the past 24 hours.

He said 24 militants were killed and 11 others wounded during the gun battles.Mullahinfo-icon Fazlullah, a Taliban commander, was among the dead, he said. Another rebel commander, Mullah Mohammad Ewaz, was injured.

The security forces destroyed weapons, equipment and vehicles belonging to the Taliban, Tasal said. He added only one Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier was killed and three others were wounded.

A police official, who wished to go unnamed, said new security posts had been created in the Ainak area of Nawa district and in the 2nd police district of Lashkargah.

However, the source said Afghan forces in the Bolan area of Lashkargah and Nad Ai district vacated some posts that were captured by the Taliban.

The insurgents also confirmed clashes in Helmand. But Taliban spokesmanZabihullah Mujahidsaid none of the fighters suffered casualties in the past 24 hours.

He claimed 13 security personnel were killed and eight of their tanks destroyed in the past 24 hours.

Helmand has been the scene of repeated gunbattles between Afghan forces and the Taliban over the past several months.

The Taliban were able to capture several areas of Lashkargah and a number of districts of the restive province.

Helmand has 13 districts, with six of them under Taliban control. The Afghan forces control only district centres of many towns.
