5 insurgents detained in Nangarhar

JALALABAD/KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Intelligence officials have detained five insurgents in various districts of eastern Nangarhar province, where six rebels joined the peace process, officials said on Tuesday.

Nangarhar governor’s spokesman, Attuallh Khogyani, told a news conference here that National Directorate (NDSinfo-icon) personnel detained three persons from a car in Ghazi Amanullah Khan Township in Rodat district. He said the detainees were expert in planting roadside bombs.

Landmines, silencer-fitted pistols and bullets were recovered from the detainees, said Khogyani. He said NDS forces had also nabbed a Talibaninfo-icon member Mohammad Jalal in Batikot district. His comrade, Ilyas Mohammad, had also been detained in Achin district, he added.

According to Khogyani, the two would collect ushr and Zakatinfo-icon from people in districts on behalf of Taliban

Separately, a six-member Taliban group joined the peace process in the Pachiragam district. The group, led by commander Imaminfo-icon Jan, had been active against government activities spearheaded by Imam Jan in Pachiragam district.

Khogyani said the reconciliation was a result of joint efforts by the High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC)’s provincial chapter and NDS personnel. So far more than 1,000 insurgents had reconciled with the government this year.

In southern Kandahar province, a local policeman died after being poisoned in Arghandab district. The incident happened in Minara village, a security source told Pajhwok Afghan News without giving further details.

Kandahar police spokesman, Zia Durrani, promised details into the incident after investigation.

Meanwhile, a bakers’ representative Haji Amanullah was shot injured by insurgents in Chonai area of Kandahar city, the provincial capital.

Security officials were yet to speak to the media about the incident. But Kandahar municipality spokesman, Zamari Sargand, confirmed Amanullah was injured by rebels.

Amanullah was attacked after an argument over the appointment a chief from among Kandahar bakers. The injured was evacuated to Mirwais hospital and his condition was said to be stable.
