KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): The governor for southern Kandahar province and the UAE ambassador to Afghanistaninfo-icon were among nearly a dozen others injured in a bomb blast that killed at least three people in a government guesthouse in the southern province late on Tuesday.

The blast took place inside the governor’s house in Kandahar City, the provincial capital, at about 7pm, the governor’s spokesman, Samim Khpalwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the injured included Governor Humamyun Azizi and UAE ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi and a number of Emirati diplomats.

Khpalwak said the nature of the attack was not known as yet.

Another government official put the number of those killed at 12 and those injured at 14. He said the injured included the governor’s office head, commerce and industry deputy head Sadiq Momand, trader Hashim Karzai and a number of other traders and officials.

It was said Kandahar foreign affairs head Saeed Ahmad was among the dead and the deputy governor, Abdul Ali Shamsi, was missing.

Sources said some bodies were burnt beyond recognition. A doctor at the Mirwais Hospital, who refused to be named, said they had been delivered 12 injured people, including Governor Azizi and the UAE ambassador.

He said the injured persons were being treated and their injuries were not life-threatening. The UAE envoy arrived in Kandahar earlier in the day to lay the foundation stone of an orphanage.
