LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Nineteen Talibaninfo-icon fighters have been killed and 25 others wounded during two days of clashes with security forces in the troubled Sangin district of southern Helmand province, officials said on Tuesday.

The clashes erupted on Monday morning when armed militants stormed security posts in various parts of the Sangin centre.

Col. Mohammad Rassoul Zazi, 215 Maiwand Military Corps spokesman in Helmand, told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces had repulsed the Taliban attack in Sangin.

He said so far 19 rebels had been killed and 25 others wounded. Two Afghan National Army service members were killed and as many wounded during the clashes. Airstrikes by Afghan forces destroyed five four hideouts of the insurgents.

Col. Zazi said the attacking rebels faced stiff residence from security forces, blocking their advance.

The governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, said commando forces backed by air support had reached Sangin.

Deputy head of the provincial council, Abdul Majid Akhunzada, told Pajhwok that Sangin was an important district and the government should rescue it from falling into the hands of insurgents.

“The conflict is still ongoing. Forces available in the district are insufficient and if serious attention is not paid, Sangin will meet the fate of Musa Qala and Nawzad districts.”

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi said clashes in Sangin continued for a second day on Tuesday, with both the sides suffering casualties. He provided no figures.

On Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah arrived in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, and assessed the security situation in Helmand.

He directed the security forces to defeat the Taliban before the arrival of spring.

Helmand has 13 districts and Taliban militants have been in control of six districts.
