KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Hundreds of protestors in southeastern Khost province on Wednesday urged the central government to dismiss the governor and other provincial officials over what they claimed their involvement in corruption.

The local residents staged a protest rally in Mandozai district, blocking the Khost-Gardez highway for two hours. Big and small vehicles were stranded on both sides of the blockade.

The demonstrators lashed out at Governor Hukam Khan Habibi, accusing him of grabbing tribal lands besides usurping and selling government properties.

They chanted slogans against the provincial administration, calling for dismissal of all corruption-tainted officials.

One of the rally participants, Aziz Rahman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the governor considered people’s land as government property and was implementing township schemes on the usurped land.

“The governor is distributing land which belongs to us, we won’t allow someone to distribute our land in the name of residential plots. The governor should give up grabbing and selling our land.”

The protestors warned if the central government didn’t address their issue, then they would carry out more protests.

Meanwhile, Khost governor’s spokesman, Mubariz Muhammad Zadran, said on land in Khost where the government executes projects is the government’s own.

He asked the protestors to move the court if they had documents of land ownership and the court would decide the matter

The protest comes a day after local residents and provincial council members accused the provincial administration, particularly the governor, of corruption and land-usurping and selling.
