MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Nine notorious commanders were among 18 insurgents killed during the newly-launched anti-insurgent operation in eastern Laghman province, an official said on Saturday.

Laghman governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces conducted air and ground offensive codenamed ‘Almas-39’ against insurgents in Shamram, Qalattak, and Sabarabad areas of Alishang district on Friday night.

He said during the operation nine insurgents and as many dreaded rebel commanders and leaders--including the two notorious commanders Sangari alias Khyber and Atal Omarzai--were killed.

Zwak said 10 other insurgents and one other militant commander suffered severe injuries during the operation.

Commander Sangari alias Khyber was a landmine expert and was known killing without reason.

Laghman governor, Abdul Jabbar Naeemi, while praising the operation jointly conducted by security, defense and air forces, directed all security forces to seriously avoid civilian casualties during offensive.

No civilian had suffered casualties and only one soldier suffered superficial wounds during the operation, Sarhadi Zwak said.

Meanwhile, Najibullah, a resident of Alingar district, said operation was ongoing since last night and they were aware of the killing of some important Talibaninfo-icon leaders. The security situation in Laghman had recently deteriorated and the provincial capital was also insecure, he added.

He thanked the security organs for launching the wide-scale operation in the area.

Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed the fighters had carried out attacks in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, and Alishang districts, inflicting heavy casualties on government soldiers. He said nothing about casualties of the insurgents.
