AIBAK (Pajhwok): Government officials in northern Samangan prevented the marriage of an 8-year-old girl to a 40-year-old man, who with the help of a local prayer leader (also called Mullahinfo-icon) arranged the marriage, an official said on Saturday.

Sirajuddin Fitrat, the Hazrat Sultan district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News Yasmin, 8, hailing from Khulm district of northern Balkh district was handed over by her father to Nasrullah to look after her as mother of the minor girl had died.

He said last week a local Imaminfo-icon named Mullah Mohammad Musa tied the knot of the minor girl with Narullah, 40, who has a wife and four children.

When the local Imam was asked about the marriage of minor girl to Nasrullah he said it was prohibited for Yasmin to live in Nasrullah’s home because she was his nothing so to make her living there legalize he had to tie their knot.   

Fitrat said the local administration after learning about the issue detained Nasrullah and Mullah Imam and referred the case to judicial organs to dismiss the marriage. He said Yasmin was given in the protection of her aunt.

Gulalai Safi, rights director at the womeninfo-icon’s affairs department, termed the minor girl marriage as violent act. She said violence against women declined in Samangan this year compared to the past and it was due to the efforts of different organizations working for women rights.
