President inaugurates joint session of parliament

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The first joint session of the parliament’s seventh year and 16th legal term was inaugurated by President Ashraf Ghani on Monday when lawmakers returned from a 45day winter recess.

In line with Article 107 of the constitution, the National Assembly holds two regular sessions annually. The term of both regular sessions is nine months every year, and when needed, the assembly could extend its term.

Extraordinary sessions of the assembly during recess shall be convened by a presidential order. Article 83 says members of the house shall be elected by the people through free, general, secret and direct balloting.

The house tenure shall terminate after the announcement of elections results and a new parliament shall commence work. Elections for members of the house shall be held 30-60 days prior to the expiration of its term.

But last year, the Presidential Palace said the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon could continue its work until the next parliamentary election, But when the parliamentary polls will take place is yet to be announced.
