Kabul considers Moscow key regional ally: Atmar

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar on Friday said Kabul considered Moscow a key regional ally and Russia should extend all cooperation to Afghanistaninfo-icon in its quest for peace and stability.

Atmar, who left Kabul for Moscow on Friday, met his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev there, a statement from the National Security Council office said.

The meeting between Atmar and Patrushev conferred on the war against terrorism, the Afghan peace process and security and political relations between the two countries.

At the meeting, the Russian side said their latest contacts with the Afghan Talibaninfo-icon were aimed at encouraging the group to join the Afghan government-initiated peace process, the statement said.

The meeting also discussed in detail Russian cooperation with Afghanistan in area of security.

Concerns were shared at the meeting about cultivation, production and smuggling of drugs and the two sided agreed at joint efforts to fight the menace of narcotics.

Atmar said Afghanistan considered Russia a key regional ally and needed Moscow’s cooperation in the fight against terror, assistance for Afghan security forces and restoring peace and stability and countering narcotics.

Afghanistan ambassador to Russia Abdul Qayum Kuchiinfo-icon and Russia special representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov were present at the meeting.
