KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Civil society activists on Thursday lambasted Seema Samar, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) head, for her recent comments regarding the release of Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) prisoners and demanded her dismissal.

A day earlier, Samar told a gathering that she hoped HIA leader Gulbadin Hekmayar would not repeat his past acts and would not return to violence.

She said the government should scrutinize all cases and individuals whose crimes were not serious and had been detained just for their affiliation with the HIA.

She had asked the government to consider personal crimes and ensure those being release had not committed war crimes.

She had said Hekmatyar could not reverse the strides the Afghans had taken towards rebuilding their country and reviving their civilization, in which the women had a special role.

Attaullah Heran, a civil societyinfo-icon activist, said Samar’s comments were against the national interest. “In the past 15 years, many crimes have been committed but AIHRC was silent.”

He accused the rights commission head of undermining the national interest for her personal political advantage.

He demanded of the government to show Samar the door and said: “There is no dearth of individuals to head the AIHRC, nor the commission is inherited by her.”

Mujeeb Lehaz, another civil society activist, said the AIHRC was not an independent body and its head Samar had shown her opposition to the peace process with her comments.

Some other civil activists held similar views at the gathering and demanded the AIHRC head to be dismissed.
