FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): At least 16 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents have been killed and wounded during clashes with government forces in western Farah province, where a prosecutor was also assassinated by unidentified armed men, officials said on Saturday.

Police spokesman Iqbal Bahir told Pajhwok Afghan News Ghulam Yahya Alizai, the public security prosecutor in Khak-I-Safid district, who had traveled to Farah city a few days back, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday at around 2pm in the limits of 2nd municipal district of the provincial capital.

He said no one had been so far detained in connection with the assassination.

Based on another report, insurgents attacked some security posts in Parchaman district of the province.

A military official, Noor-ul-Haq Khaliqi, told Pajhwok Afghan News rebels conducted coordinated attacks on some security check points in Tajgo and Barfishar areas of the district at around 3pm today.

The rebels faced stiff resistance from security forces, and as a result of retaliatory firing, six insurgents were killed and 10 others were wounded, he said, adding no security personnel suffered casualties in the clashes.

However, the Taliban have alleged capturing three villages--Guana, Wal and Lar Ghar--and a military centre of the government forces during the attack, saying they have also inflicted heavy casualties on government forces.

The group has denied any casualties to the fighters.
