3 killed, 31 injured in Paktia bank attack

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): All assailants, who attacked a Kabulinfo-icon Bank branch in the capital of southeastern Paktika province on Saturday, were killed, bringing the assault to an end, police said.

Two policemen and one civilian were killed and another 30 civilians were injured as the group attack unfolded in Gardez, the provincial capital, said police chief Brig. Gen. Toryalai Abdyani.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News the attack began at about 3pm when  a group of three assailants stormed the bank. One of the attackers blew up his explosives-filled vest at the gate of the bank, allowing the two others to enter the building, he said.

Police and other security forces, who immediately arrived at the scene, were quick to kill the two attackers, preventing a large number of people from being killed and wounded, he added.

He said the bank’s buildings had partially damaged in the assault, but the money was safe.

Deputy Governor Abdul Wali Sahi told Pajhwok that two policemen and a civilian were killed 31 other civilians injured in the attack.

The assailants were in police uniform and all of them had been killed, said Sahi, who added the slain civilians included an officer of the bank.

Gardez Civil Hospital acting director, Dr. Sher Mohammad, confirmed receiving 31 injured people with six in critical condition.

Some of the injured who were in critical condition had been transferred to Kabul, he said.

The Kabul Bank branch is located in a busy area of Gardez city, the capital of Paktia province. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
