NATO leaders to reaffirm Afghan commitments

NATO leaders to reaffirm Afghan commitments

May 23, 2017 - 22:35

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Thursday’s NATOinfo-icon summit will be an opportunity for the alliance leaders to reaffirm three Afghanistaninfo-icon-related commitments, an official said on Tuesday.

In total, 29 government leaders and heads of state, including US President Donald Trump, will attend the meeting amid a massive security operation.

High on the agenda will be how the new US administration and its European partners cooperate on counterterrorism.

A NATO official in Brussels, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Afghanistan would not be on the agenda.

However, he said the leaders were expected to share views on Afghanistan within the framework of the two agenda items (burden-sharing and defence spending; and NATO’s role in fighting terrorism.

“So the meeting will be an opportunity to reaffirm NATO’s continued commitment to Afghanistan’s security,” he said.

He said the NATO leaders would discuss the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and keeping it under regular review.

He said the leaders would also confirm their commitment to contributing to the funding of the Afghan security forces through 2020.

They would continue working with the Afghan authorities to enhance NATO-Afghanistan enduring partnership of political dialogue and practical cooperation.

“Also, even though the meeting will not be a force generation conference, we expect NATO leaders to affirm their support to the ongoing force generation process related to Resolute Support, with the view to ensuring that the mission is properly resourced.”
