Presidential Advisor Akram Khapalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News there were many contenders for the post but the president preferred to appoint someone within the HPC leadership to better push forward the peace related issues.
Khalili recently served as advisor to the HPC.
He said the newly appoint HPC chairman would participate in the Tuesday Kabul Peace Process.
