‘Peace process sans women’s participation incomplete’

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon commission on human rights, civil societyinfo-icon and womeninfo-icon’s affairs head, lawmaker Fauzia Kofi, on Saturday demanded greater role for women in the government system.

Kofi told reporters in Kabul the government had ignored women’s participation in different departments and urged greater role for the gender in the country’s political landscape.

She said women’s role was vital for peace and stability in the country and their participation in social and political arena was the need of the hour.

The lower house member said a strategy for political and social empowerment of women had been developed in consultations with civil society groups and women’s rights watchdogs.

In the strategy, the government and the National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) had been asked to ensure women’s political participation and their active role in the peace process.

“Without participation of women, the peace process is incomplete. The process needs more coordination,” she said.

Habiba Surabi, deputy head of the High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC), also stressed greater political and social role for women. She said currently 12 women were part of the HPC 62-member team.
