Dozens of pardoned inmates freed from Herat jail

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): As many as 154 prisoners, including 14 womeninfo-icon, have been released from the central jail in western Herat province in compliance with a presidential decree, the jailor said on Monday.

The prisoners were released during a special ceremony at the jail in Herat City, the provincial capital. The jail warden, Sardar Mohammad Zazai told the ceremony held the inmates released had been pardoned under the presidential decree issued on the occasion of March 8 (International Women's Day) and April 28 (Mujahideen Victory Day).

He said the released inmates had served most part of their sentences and had been imprisoned for committing different crimes.

Zazai asked the released inmates to learn from the time they spent inside the jail and start a new and normal ordinary life.

According to him, currently about 3,000 prisoners, including 168 women, are held in two separate sections of the jail.
