Momand tribe slams Noor for maltreating PC member

Momand tribe slams Noor for maltreating PC member

Aug 16, 2017 - 16:31

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Momand Tribe’s Unity Council on Wednesday condemned the maltreatment of Balkh provincial council member Mohammad Asif Momand, asking the government to probe the incident.

The council stressed the individuals identified as criminals in connection with the incident should be punished. It warned if their demands were not met, they would take to the streets.

On August 7, Balkh PC member Asif Momand accused Governor Atta Mohammad Noor of having hand in corruption. Momand claimed Noor had threatened him with death.

According to reports, Momand departed for Mazar-i-Sharif from Kabul airport, where he was arrested after an exchange of fire for four hours on Monday evening.

Balkh police chief Syed Kamal Sadaat had told media outlets gunmen loyal to Noor had detained Momand. But the governor said Momand had been held based on a letter from security organs. However, the AGO said it had not issue arrest warrants for Momand.

On Wednesday, the council head for youth affairs, Mohammad Yaqoob Momand, read out a resolution letter at a press conference. The resolution said the council denounced the maltreatment of Momand at the Maulana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi Airport as an unacceptable incident.

“We ask the government not to play politics on the issue and take serious steps to punish criminals, strongmen and corrupt individuals,” it added.

“We ask the government to investigate the killing of two citizens and injuries to another seven at the airport. In case action is not taken, the nation’s quest for justice will continue. We will protest in a peaceful way to get justice.”
