HIA hits out at Noor for maltreating PC member

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) on Thursday condemned the maltreatment of Balkh provincial council member Mohammad Asif Momand, asking the government to try the perpetrators.

On August 7, Balkh PC member Asif Momand accused Governor Atta Mohammad Noor of having hand in corruption. He claimed Noor had threatened him with death.

According to reports, Momand departed for Mazar-i-Sharif from Kabul airport, where he was arrested after an exchange of fire for four hours on Monday evening.

Balkh police chief Syed Kamal Sadaat had told media outlets gunmen loyal to Noor had detained Momand. But the governor said Momand had been held based on a letter from security organs. However, the AGO said it had not issue arrest warrants for Momand.

A statement from the Gulbadin Hekmatyar party said: “HIA denounces in strongest terms the barbaric gun attack on Momand by the Balkh governor that resulted in 10 casualties.

“We ask the government to bring the perpetrators to justice immediately and punish them in line with the law. No Afghan can be silent and indifferent to an influential public representative being arrested by arrogant gunmen.”

The statement added if the government did not take serious steps, the issue would become more complicated. The relatives of those killed and wounded would seek revenge, leading to serious consequences, it warned.

“This incident comes days after Governor Noor warned the central government of storming the airport and other government installations if his demand weren’t met...”

The HIA said if immediate remedial steps were not taken, people would lose trust in the government and rule of law and everyone would be obliged to choose other ways of defending their lives.

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) says the president had tasked a delegation to comprehensively investigate the arrest of Momand. The delegation is currently in Balkh probing the incident.
