SHARANA (Pajhwok): Security officials in southeastern Paktika province on Saturday denied the Talibaninfo-icon had overrun the Gomal district after a days-long battle.

Earlier, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid had told Pajhwok Afghan News the district was under their control after days of clashes.

He claimed inflicting heavy casualties on security forces and seizing weapons and ammunition by the militants as a result of the battle for the district.

Col. Dadullah Khan Hotak, acting police spokesman, told Pajhwok that security forces had ‘tactically’ retreated from the district building.

“The district building was destroyed during the clash, the district’s administration was moved to the border police battalion to continue serving the people, the district has not collapsed,” he said.

Brig. Gen. Rahamdil Khan, joint forces commander in the district, said clashes had been ongoing in Gomal district for the past 24 days.

He said so far 216 militants had been killed and more than 100 wounded.

A local official, who declined to be named, said security forces went out and Gomal collapsed into the hands of Taliban.

According to security officials, nine Afghan forces personnel have been killed and 15 others wounded so far in the clashes in Gomal near the border with Pakistaninfo-icon.
