Schoolteacher, religious scholar gunned down

JALALABAD/MAHMOOD RAQI (Pajhwok): Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a teacher in eastern Nangarhar province and a religious scholar in central Kapisa, officials said on Wednesday.

Mohammad Asif Shinwarai, spokesman for the Nangarhar educationinfo-icon department, told Pajhwok Afghan News masked gunmen killed schoolteacher in Khogyani district on Tuesday evening.

He said Mulavi Abdul Hakim, having served as a teacher for the past 10 years. was attacked on his way home from a local mosqueinfo-icon in the Momlay area of the district.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, informed that a manhunt had been launched for the killers. He said the attackers took the advantage of darkness and managed to flee.

In a similar incident, unidentified assailants shot dead a religious scholar in the Regrawan area of Kohistan district on Tuesday night, Kapisa police spokesman Mohammad Ayub Yousafzai said.

He said: “Qari Sayed Ali was a prayer leader at the Nizamkhel mosque in Kohistan. He was killed after leading Isha prayer.’’

Yousafzai said no one had been arrested has so far in connection with the incident. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
