KABUL (Pajhwok): More than two dozen inspectors from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) have successfully completeda a month-long technical course in Turkey.

Twenty-five mine inspectors graduated from the training course on correctly overseeing and regulating mining activities at the Istanbul Technical University (ITU).

The Afghan-German Cooperation funded the course, covering fourtechnical training on mining processing as well as inspection tours to Turkish gold and coal open-pit mines.

At the closing ceremony, the head of the MoMP’s mining inspection directorate, Eng. Mohammad Ali Behsoodi, commented: “We appreciate that the Afghan-German Cooperation funds these courses.”

He hoped the training would help the mine inspectors working on oversight programmes in Afghanistan in line with international norms and standards.

The MoMP’s inspectors received practice-oriented training on planning and designing open-pit mines as well as on different aspects of mineral processing such as ore concentration processes.

Afghanistan is rich in mineral resources, including copper, iron, gold, lithium, rare earth and cobalt. These resources offer great potential to increase economic growth, generate additional revenues and create many jobs in the extractive sector.

However, to exploit this potential efficiently, mining activities have to be well-managed, regulated and overseen transparently, according to a statement from the Afghan-German Cooperation.

The programme Promoting Good Governance in the Extractive Sector in Afghanistan is being implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaftfür Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
