KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): The residents of northern Kunduz province say security forces’ vehicles have never obeyed traffic rules and their reckless driving often result in fatal accidents.

Amruddin Wali, the Provincial Council (PC) head, told Pajhwok Afghan News that military vehicles were often involved in accidents in which human lives were lost. He stressed a halt to illegal and self-styled driving on roads and streets.

Some residents of Kunduz City, the provincial capital, also complained against inappropriate driving by some people and military personnel.

Bashir Khan Safi, a resident, told Pajhwok Afghan News that military vehicles were driven in the city with high speed which should be prevented.

He added: “Besides other issues in Kunduz, speedy military vehicles have worried residents. Over 20 people were killed in the past one month due to high speed.”

Police in Kunduz acknowledged high speed driving by military vehicles. Police Chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Hameed Hameedi said all military officials had been directed to get driving licenses. He said military personnel like common people should drive according to rules.

“All vehicles carry registration numbers and drivers who violate traffic rules, their numbers should be noted and shared with us,” he said.

At least eight people have been killed and 14 other injured during the past one month in accidents blamed on reckless driving by military personnel.
