SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): A dozen Talibaninfo-icon insurgents were claimed killed in a newly launched security operation in Khanqa district of northern Jawzjan province, the provincial police chief said on Monday.

Brig. Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani told Pajhwok Afghan News the clearing operation launched on Sunday afternoon involved ground and air forces and would likely to continue until complete annihilation of insurgents in the district.

He said at least 12 rebels had been killed and 14 more wounded so far in the operation codenamed ‘Naveed 5’. Security forces remained unharmed, he added.

Jawzjani said the security forces were closing in on Qaleechabad village, where Taliban existed in large numbers.

Abdul Saboor, a resident of Bish Kapa village of the district, said the Taliban arrived in their village and Qaleechabad about one month ago, but the government did nothing until they became strong. “People are fleeing this area, leaving their homes behind for Shiberghan and Balkh.”  He asked the government to come to the aid of the displaced families.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban’s spokesman, in a statement claimed the fighters pushed back governmental forces attacking them in Qaleechabad. One officer was among seven soldiers killed in the clash, he added.

The Taliban after overrunning several areas in Aqcha district and in neighboring Khanqa district about one month back stormed public uprising forces’ posts in Bish Kapa and Qaleechabad villages and took control of the villages.
