Kabul to host special meeting on peace with militants
KABUL (Pajhwok): A high-level meeting will be held in three months in Kabul to map out a comprehensive roadmap for peace with insurgents, a senior official said on Friday.
At the end of the two-day Senior Officials Meeting (SOM), Finance Minister Eklil Ahmad Hakimi made the announcement at a press conference in Kabul.
Hakimi said the special meeting on the peace process would be arranged in compliance with directives from President Ashraf Ghani.
Flanked by UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto, the minister said officials and entrepreneurs from certain countries would attend the gathering.
Ahead of any deal with the militants, he said, the government had to discuss the issue with the global community. He was optimistic of good progressive toward reconciliation in the months ahead.
For his part, Yamamoto recalled, some countries had hosted Afghan peace parleys in the past. The meeting would seek to coordinate peace attempts and make the process Afghan-led and Afghan-owned.
