PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistaninfo-icon on Tuesday reiterated its stance on ending the war in neighbouring Afghanistaninfo-icon, calling for open-ended talks between Kabulinfo-icon and the Talibaninfo-icon.

Dr Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, said a military intervention did not represent a solution to the conflict and negotiations were the way forward to achieve an end to the war.

Participating in an annual General Assembly debate on the situation in Afghanistan, she said: “The promotion of a political settlement and the pursuit of a military solution are mutually incompatible.”

The state-run APP news agency quoted her as warning that a resort to the military option without an accompanying political strategy would further disrupt regional peace and security.

She added the global fraternity believed that peace in Afghanistan could be sustained only through dialogue. “The resolution adopted today reaffirms this international consensus.”

Pakistan had always supported a political settlement as the most suitable means of ending the conflict and suffering in Afghanistan, Lodhi said, hoping the Afghan reconciliation plan would focus on reaching a negotiated solution.

“Pakistan facilitates the transit of Afghan goods without any quantitative restrictions. We have recently taken a series of measures to facilitate transit trade,” she said, stressing closer cooperation between the neighbours to ensure sustained peace in South Asian.
