Paktika rally demands probe into police infighting

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents on Monday took to the streets in the capital of southeastern Paktika province against yesterday’s clash between police officers that caused many casualties.

Two policemen and one civilian were killed and 21 others were wounded after a gun-battle erupted between two police officers in Sharana on Sunday afternoon.

Hundreds of people took part in the protest rally that started at 10am and continued until late afternoon. One of the speakers, Mualvi Masoom Kheri told Pajhwok that they wanted an open trial of the two officers.

He said if those responsible for the civilian casualties were not tried in the court of law, they would continue their protest.

Another protestor, Amir Khan, said police job was to protect people, buit they killed and wounded civilians yesterday.

Special forces commander in Paktika, Azizullah Karwan, said the two officers had been arrested and referred to the National Directorate of Security for investigation.
