PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistaninfo-icon has been suspended for three months due to harsh winter conditions in their home country, a media report said on Friday.
The process would remain suspended till March 1, 2018, Dawn quoted an unnamed official as saying. As a result of the suspension, all voluntary repatriation centres in Pakistan have been shut.
Every year, one official told the daily, UNHCR suspended the operation from December to March. About 48,000 of the 1.4 million refugees in Pakistan have returned to their country over the past nine months.
The legal residency status of registered Afghan refugees would end by the end of December when the federal government would decide whether or not to extend their stay.
