5-man target killing squad busted in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A five-member gang accused of targeted killings and planting landmines has been arrested in central Uruzgan province, an official said on Sunday.

The deputy governor, Abdul Wahid Patan, said the group was detained based on an intelligence report last night during a special operation.

Patan said the detainees had confessed to killing eight government officials in Tirinkot, the provincial capital, and had blown up government vehicles in various areas using improvised explosive devices.

He said two silencer-fitted pistols, nine remote control devices, two firearms, explosives, drugs, a laptop computer and other materials were recovered from the detainees.

The deputy governor said the detainees had the plan to target more government officials, but they were arrested before doing so.
