Atmar meets Chinese special envoy on Afghan peace

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar on Monday said countries having links with anti-Afghan government insurgents should utilize their influence in a positive way by encouraging the rebels into negotiations.

Atmar said this during a meeting with Deng Xijun, the special representative of China for Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon, at his office here on Monday.

A statement from the National Security Council said both sides discussed political and security situation of the region.

It quoted Atmar as saying: “Regional and global countries have shared interests and common enemy in Afghanistan, thus for suppressing enemy and achieving the shared benefits, there is a dire need for sincere cooperation in this regard.”

“The time has arrived for regional countries to avail the opportunities provided by the Afghan government and turn Afghanistan into the pivot of cooperation.”

He said regional and global countries were aware of Afghanistan’s clear stance that its people and government wanted cordial and bilateral ties with all the countries.

For his part, the Chinese envoy, Xijun, thanked and appreciated efforts and sacrifices laid down by the Afghanistan people and government for security and stability of the region.

He assured of his country’s support towards the Afghan peace dialogue with insurgents.

Meanwhile, Atmar, while expressing gratitude to Xijun, said regional countries should cooperate wholeheartedly in terms of security, stability and the Afghan peace process. “Those countries that have relations with insurgents should use their ties in a positive direction by bringing rebels to the negotiating table.”
