KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Oranos, a new privately owned television channel, has started broadcasting in northern Kunduz province.

The initiative is a joint venture between two journalists Hedayatullah Ziarmal and Zabihullah Majidi. The TV will air programs for eight hours a day on 487.25 MHz.

Ziarmal, the channel director, told the launch ceremony that their channel was an independent and commercial media outlet. “The channel is run with people’s support and money earned through advertisements,” he said.

He said currently the TV channel broadcasted its programs in Dari and Pashtu languages from 4pm to 12am (eight hours a day), citing lack of technical materials for the limited duration.

The channel would air educational, cultural, scientific, entertainment, economic, politics, healthinfo-icon and social programs, Ziarmal added.

Zabihullah Majidi, head of Culture and Communication Foundation of Afghanistaninfo-icon Media, said that most of media outlets in Kunduz had been destroyed as a result of Talibaninfo-icon attacks on the provincial capital Kunduz City.

He said tax and fines, annual license fee and high electricity rate were problems media outlets currently faced.

Governor Asadullah Omarkhel, while inaugurating Oranos TV channel, said that the Afghan government had always supported the media and journalists and provided timely information to them.

“Kunduz journalists are heroes because they brave threats in line of duty to share people’s voice with the government,” he said.

Currently three private and one government TV channels and nine private radio stations are operational in Kunduz province.
