KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon or Senate on Tuesday welcomed granting trust vote to 11 ministers-designate, but regretted denying the same to the only female candidate.

The Wolesi Jirga on Monday approved 11 ministers-designate except Nargis Nehan, the only female presidential nominee for the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

Currently the ministries of foreign affairs, education, mines and petroleum and information and culture are headed by acting officials.

Sadiqa Balkhi, a Meshrano Jirga member, said the country’s womeninfo-icon were disappointed by the Lower House’s rejection of Nargis Nehan.

She said Nehan was qualified enough and lawmakers should have endorsed her.

Senator Safiullah Hashemi: “There were some candidates who had no higher educationinfo-icon but they were voted, lawmakers should clarify why they rejected Nargis Nehan, a well qualified woman.”

Najiba Hussaini, another member of the upper house, asked the government to nominate women for the remaining three ministries currently led by acting officials.

She asked Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon members to vote for female candidates when introduced by the government.

Zalmai Zabulai, a senator from Zabul province, expressed concern over rejection of Nargis Nehan and said: “Nehan was rejected by female lawmakers, they even campaigned against her.”

Zabuli claimed most of male lawmakers who were his friends had told him they voted for Nehan.

A number of other senators were of the same views and they demanded more share for women in the Cabinet.

Dilbar Nazari, women’s affairs minister and Salamat Azimi, counternarcotics minister, are the only two female ministers in the Afghan Cabinet.

Meshrano Jirga Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said it was up to the Wolesi Jirga to approve or reject a minister-designate.

“It is a positive step that 11 candidates secured the vote of confidence, but we were disappointed when Nehan failed.”
