Country to face new crisis if polls delayed: Sayyaf

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Veteran jihadi leader Abdul Rab Rasoul Sayyaf on Thursday warned the government of “a dangerous situation” if the upcoming elections were not held on schedule or rigged.

Addressing a gathering in Kabul, the Dawat-i-Islami Afghanistaninfo-icon (DIA) party leader they had never wanted chaos, instability in the country and instead they suffered and deprived, but never allowed the country to be disordered. “But now I am unhappy with the government.”

Sayyaf said no individual or government alone could not steer the country out of its problems, asking political parties to join hands for the cause.

About the parliamentary and district council elections slated for July 7, 2018, the former jihadiinfo-icon leader said necessary preparations were yet to be made for the elections. He warned the country would face new crises if the elections did not happen in time or suffered from rigging and fraud.

“Transparent elections need an impartial monitoring. Those who administer the election process should be neutral and conduct the polls in a transparent manner,” he said.

He added: “We don’t want the militants to surrender like prisoners, the government and the nation should offer them an honest and respectable way to reconcile and renounce violence.”

Regarding land-grabbing, Sayyaf said if one meter of land was found grabbed by his party, he was ready to take responsibility for that.
