KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday laid the foundation stone of a ‘Diagnosis and Treatment Centre for Cancer Diseases’ at the Kabul Medical University’s (KMU) teaching hospital of Aliabad.

The cancer centre would be built at a total cost of $27 million funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to officials, all residents across the country would be provided services at the centre.

“In 2004, we reached an agreement with IAEA on equipping and preparing the centre; but work on it has since been postponed until now.”

The CEO ordered officials to make efforts at accelerating work on building and equipping the centre. He asked the Kabul Medical University authorities to seriously preserve and maintain the equipment and facilities of the centre.

With inauguration of the centre, the CEO said a huge number of problems of the country’s residents, who visited regional and global countries for treatment, would be addressed.

Meanwhile, Minister of Higher Educationinfo-icon Dr. Najibullah Khawja Omari, also spoke on the occasion, said the foundation of the centre showed that academic and higher education institutes of Afghanistaninfo-icon had enough capacity and ability in medical sector.

The minister said as soon as the centre was put into service, problems of thousands of citizens suffering from cancer would be resolved to some extent.
