Dec 10, 2017 - 20:14

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Twenty-five couples on Sunday tied the knot at a mass marriage event in the capital of northern Balkh province. The bridegrooms included a soldier.

Arranged by the Provincial Information and Culture department, the mass marriage ceremony was held at a hotel in Mazar-i-Sharif. Twenty relatives of each the couple were invited to attend the ceremony.

Youth affairs official at the culture and information department, Azimul Haq, told Pajhwok Afghan News the couples were registered for the free marriage with the help of adverts.

He said the mass marriage cost 1.8 million afghanis. He said the couples had been unable to enter the wedlock due to undue traditional spending on weddings.

An Afghan National Army service member was among the bridegrooms. He told Pajhwok Afghan New he was proud of being member of the Afghan army but he could not afford his marriage in his monthly salary.

Sweeta, one of the brides, said she was happy that they spent no money on their wedding. She said those who spent heavily on weddings should instead help poor couples.

The couples were also distributed some cash assistance, with each couple receiving 35000 afghanis and some household items.
