UNAMA to increase aid for conflict-hit Uruzgan families

Dec 13, 2017 - 20:33

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): UNAMA on Wednesday said aid distribution to war-affected families in central Uruzgan province would be enhanced.

This was said by Toby Lanzer, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA), during his visit to Uruzgan province on Wednesday.

He said UNAMA had planned to increase its humanitarian aid to those hapless and impoverished families in Uruzgan who had been displaced by recent fighting and insecurities.

The visit comes as UNAMA has stopped its activities in Uruzgan since 2014. UNAMA’s deputy special representative said his visit to the province was aimed at meeting the displaced families who had fled home towns due to fighting over the past few months.

According to him, they were increasing humanitarian aid because hundreds of families had fled homes due to recent righting in the province.

He said food was currently being distributed and healthinfo-icon services provided to the displaced families in Tirinkot, the provincial capital and if possible the relief aid would be extended to districts as well.

Lanzer went on to say that as their organization was impartial; it wanted all sides to the war not to be a hurdle to prevent shifting assistances to far-away areas.

Uruzgan deputy governor, Abdul Wahid Pattan, said he discussed some topics with the visiting UNAMA delegation, who assured him of every kind of support.

The conflict has displaced as many as 13,000 in the province and many of them have taken refuge in Tirinkot city.
