Roadside blast in Helmand’s Marja district: 7 civilians dead

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Seven civilians were killed in a landmine blast in the Marja district of southern Helmand province on Sunday morning, sources said.

Kamran, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the explosion took place at around 9am when a coaster struck a roadside bomb in the Treekh Nawar area of the district.

He said seven individuals were killed and their bodies evacuated to hospital by locals. He gave no further details of the explosion. Police spokesman Abdul Salam Afghan confirmed the blast and casualties.

Meanwhile, Omar Zwak, the governor’s spokesman, said 10 individuals were on board the van. But the exact number of casualties could not be ascertained immediately, he added.

Marja district is under Talibaninfo-icon’s control, but over the past few days security forces have conducted a string of clearing operations there.
