Hekmatyar assures full support to Taliban in case of reconciliation

Dec 30, 2017 - 16:01

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) leader Gulbadin Hekmatyar says he will support Talibaninfo-icon’s legitimate demands including the withdrawal of foreign troops if they shun war and join peace talks.

He made remarks at a gathering of Afghans in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Pajhwok obtained a video of the meeting attended by Afghan Consul General Samad Afghan, HIA officials and other Afghans.

At the head of a party delegation, Hekmatyar is currently in the UAE. He told the gathering the most important thing was to put an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.

He said: “This war only eliminates Afghans and we should take our decision in this regard. Our country and our people need peace, and HIA has adopted a peaceful path.”

Hekmatyar said he would support the Taliban if they renounced violence and embraced peace. The HIA would then back Taliban’s legitimate demands, including the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.

“If peace talks begin, we will back changes in current system and implementation of Shariahinfo-icon,” he promised. But the Taliban should quit the conflict and come to the negotiating table, he continued.

He also urged the government to change its policy and bring Taliban to the negotiating table. Most of the people, who had been oppressed and their houses and land grabbed, had been forced to pick up guns.
