UNICEF pledges $48m for curriculum development

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Aimed at empowering the educational curriculum of Afghanistaninfo-icon, the United Nations Children’s' Fund (UNICEF) will provide $48 million grant to the Ministry of Educationinfo-icon (MoE).

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed on Saturday between the acting Minister of Education and the UNICEF representative here in Kabul.

Mohammad Ibrahim Shinwari prior to inking the MoU said the UNICEF’s aid would be spent on empowering and development of the MoE’s major sectors during 2018—2019.

“These sectors include the preparation of policy and strategy, capacity building, improvement of educational curriculum and Afghan children’s access to quality education.”

He further went on to say that other segment of the fund would go to educating girls and children who are out of schools as a part of the reporting on educational oversight and development of academic policy and strategy.

For her part, UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan, Adele Khodr, expressed happiness over signing the MoU of donation to MoE. She called the aid as a major step for empowerment of the ministry.

She while praising the achievements by the ministry assured of further continued assistances in various sectors.

Ms. Khodr also expressed satisfaction with the government’s programmes aimed at improving the education situation in Afghanistan, saying investment on education and training could yield effective results in future.
