US, Pakistan trade blame over fighting terrorism

US, Pakistan trade blame over fighting terrorism

Jan 02, 2018 - 10:56

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Amid a fresh exchange of allegations over failures in Afghanistaninfo-icon, the Islamabad-Washington relationship has plummeted to a new.

On Monday, President Donald Trump lambasted Islamabad for being a liar. Trump promised changing the nature of a relationship based on “nothing but lies and deceit”.

In a warning to Pakistaninfo-icon, he tweeted: “The US has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools.”

Pakistan offered safe haven to the terrorists the US was hunting in Afghanistan, the US leader wrote in the message that was re-tweeted and praised by tens of thousands of followers.

Angered by the remarks, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said: “We will respond to President Trump’s tweet shortly. Will let the worldinfo-icon know the truth -- the difference between facts and fiction.”

Also on Monday, the US ambassador to Pakistan was summoned to the Foreign Office and a strong protest was lodged with him over Trump’s remarks, Dawn reported.

Last week, Pakistan’s military spokesman Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor said Islamabad had done enough in the war on terror and it was time for the Washington and Kabulinfo-icon to do more.

According to the newspaper, Foreign Minister Asif met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to discuss the situation soon after Trump’s tirade against Pakistan.

Later in the evening, Asif told a private TV channel that Pakistan had already done enough. “We have already said no more [to the Americans] so Trump’s no more is of no importance now.

“We are ready to publicly provide details of the US aid that has been received by the country,” said the minister, who commented Trump was disappointed with the US defeat in Afghanistan.

The US should negotiate with the Talibaninfo-icon in Afghanistan instead of using the armed forces, the minister suggested. “The claim by Trump regarding the funds, if we account for it, they include reimbursements too for the services rendered by Pakistan.”

“Our land, roads, rail and, other different kinds of services were used for which we were reimbursed. A proper audit took place for the reimbursements,” he said.

Separately, Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir said: “Pakistan has given free to US: land & air communication, military bases & intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16 yrs, but they have given us nothing but invective & mistrust. They overlook cross-border safe havens of terrorists who murder Pakistanis.”

"Instead of holding us responsible for its failure in Afghanistan, he [Trump] should hold those accountable who have conceded a failure for the U.S in Afghanistan," the minister told Geo.
